Saint Joseph Missouri or otherwise informally known as St. Joe

Saint Joseph Missouri or informally known as St. Joe

St. Joseph (informally St. Joe) is a city in and the county seat of Buchanan County, Missouri, United States. It is the principal city of the St. Joseph Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Buchanan, Andrew, and DeKalb counties in Missouri and Doniphan County, Kansas. As of the 2010 census, St. Joseph had a total population of 76,780, making it the eighth largest city in the state, third largest in Northwest Missouri. The metropolitan area had a population of 127,329 in 2010.

St. Joseph is located on the Missouri River, but is perhaps best known as the starting point of the Pony Express and the death place of Jesse James. St. Joseph is also home to Missouri Western State University.

St. Joseph was founded on the Missouri River by Joseph Robidoux, a local fur trader, and officially incorporated in 1843. In its early days, it was a bustling outpost and rough frontier town, serving as a last supply point and jumping-off point on the Missouri River toward the "Wild West". It was the westernmost point in the United States accessible by rail until after the American Civil War.

The main east-west downtown streets were named for Robidoux's eight children: Faraon, Jules, Francois (Francis), Felix, Edmond, Charles, Sylvanie, and Messanie. The street between Sylvanie and Messanie was named for his second wife, Angelique.

St. Joseph, or "St. Joe", as it was called by many, was a "Jumping-Off Point" for those headed to the Oregon Territory in the mid-1800s. In these cities, including Independence, Missouri, and St. Joseph, were where pioneers would stay and purchase supplies before they would head out in wagon trains. The town was a very bustling place, and was the second city in the USA to have electric streetcars.

Between April 3, 1860, and late October 1861, St. Joseph was one of the two endpoints of the Pony Express, which operated for a short period over the land then inaccessible by rail, to provide fast mail service. The pony riders carried additionally, along with the mail, a small personal bible. Today the Pony Express Museum hosts visitors in the old stables.

In 1882, on April 3, the outlaw Jesse James was killed at his home, originally located at 1318 Lafayette, now sited next to The Patee House. In the post-Civil War years, when the economy was down, the hotel had served for a time as the home of the Patee Female College, followed by the St. Joseph Female College up to 1880. James was living under the alias of Mr. Howard. An excerpt from a popular poem of the time is: "...that dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard has laid poor Jesse in his grave."

The Heaton-Bowman-Smith Funeral Home maintains a small museum about Jesse James. Their predecessors conducted the funeral. The museum is open to the public. His home, is now known as Jesse James Home Museum. It has been relocated at least three times, and features the bullet hole from that fateful shot. St. Joseph is identified by the slogan, "Where the Pony Express started and Jesse James ended."

Among properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places are the Patee House, a former hotel is now maintained as a museum of transportation and the Missouri Theatre, an ornate movie palace.

St. Joseph's population peaked in 1900, with a census population of 102,979. This population figure is questionable, as civic leaders tried to inflate the numbers for that census. At the time, it was the home to one of the largest wholesale companies in the Midwest, the Nave & McCord Mercantile Company, as well as the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad, and the C.D. Smith & Company, which would become C.D. Smith Healthcare.

Honors

In 1997, St. Joseph was named an "All-America City" by the National Civic League. St. Joseph was voted the top true western town of 2007 by the True West Magazine, in the January/February 2008 issue.

St. Joseph is home to several retail areas, many of which are grouped along Belt Highway on the city's east side. East Hills Mall is located at North Belt Highway and Frederick Boulevard. The mall opened in 1965, was expanded in 1988, and was renovated in 2001 with a far more extensive renovation in 2008 and 2009. Developed in 2005, the Shoppes at North Village is concentrated along North Belt Highway between approximately Cook and County Line roads. This serves as a regional shopping destination. Other shopping districts include Belt Center, Hy-Vee Shopping Center, Hillcrest Plaza, East Ridge Village, and Woodlawn Shopping Center.

Education and Public schools

The St. Joseph School District operates 3 public high schools, 4 public middle schools and 16 public elementary schools in St. Joseph. There are three private grade schools, a private high school and a private K-12 Christian school. In addition, there is an active home education community that serves the city and surrounding areas. In higher education, St. Joseph is the home of a regional public university as well as a public university outreach center, a public technical school and a private technical school.

The St. Joseph Transit is publicly owned and provides bus service. Rosecrans Memorial Airport is a joint municipal/military owned airport for general aviation. It is the home of the 139th Airlift Wing of the Missouri Air National Guard, and does not have commercial service.

Media

St. Joseph currently ranks 201st largest designated market area out of 210 media markets in the United States (as ranked by Nielsen Media Research); the market covers six counties in northwestern Missouri (Holt, Worth, Nodaway, Andrew, DeKalb and Buchanan) and Doniphan County in northeastern Kansas. The St. Joseph area has one low-power and two full-power television stations, and ten radio stations.

Television

Due to its proximity to Kansas City and Omaha, stations from those markets serve as default affiliates of NBC (KSHB-TV/Kansas City), CBS (KCTV/Kansas City) and The CW (KXVO/Omaha, on DirecTV only) due to the lack of affiliates of those networks licensed to the market.

St. Joseph, MO History

St. Joseph, Missouri was founded by fur trader Joseph Robidoux who lived from 1783-1868. The location in northwest Missouri where Joseph Robidoux established his Blacksnake Hills Trading Post is modern day St. Joseph, Missouri with a population of about 75,000.

Years before founding one of the current day ten largest cities in the state of Missouri Robidoux grew up on the other side of the state in St. Louis, Missouri where he had six brothers. From an early age Joseph and his brothers were taught the family business of fur trading by their father who in the eighteenth century began sending Joseph up and down the Missouri River as a teenager to hone his trade.

In what is currently the city of Chicago Joseph Robidoux set up a fur trading post next to Fort Dearborn, Illinois but ironically his success led to his demise. As legend has it Joseph was such a proficient young businessman that more established elder men practicing his craft did not think too kindly of having a young up and comer stepping into their territory and disrupting their established business. To correct the disruption that Joseph caused the Fort Dearborn locals persuaded local Indians to threaten and disturb Joseph until he was quite literally run out of town.

After leaving Illinois Joseph established himself in modern day Omaha, Nebraska and settled down with his second wife (after the 1805 death of his first wife Eugenie) with an 1813 wedding to Angelique Vaudry. Between his two marriages Joseph had eight children (two from the first marriage and six from the second) and today the names of many of those children adorn some of the most commonly used streets in the city of St. Joseph, Missouri which he eventually founded. Among names of his children that have since been immortalized with streets named in their honor are Messanie, Faraon, Francis, Felix, and Edmond. While those names probably seem a bit outdated to most folks in the twenty-first century anyone who has spent a significant amount of time around St. Joseph, Missouri instantly recognizes those names as some of the most high traffic streets in town.

Joseph Robidoux sold his successful Nebraska fur trading business in 1822 to the American Fur Company and decided to leave the area after being motivated by the American Fur Company with a $1,000 annual payment for abiding by a non-compete agreement.

After spending time back in St. Louis after selling his business to the American Fur Company Robidoux was later hired by the American Fur Company to start a Blacksnake Hills trading post in northwest Missouri near Kansas City and in doing so Joseph Robidoux laid the groundwork for the city of St. Joseph, Missouri that has held his namesake for over 150 years.

History of Caves in the St. Joseph, Missouri area

History of Caves in the St. Joseph, Missouri area

For millions of years caves in Missouri existed in perpetual night. No light to illuminate the dazzling formations. No way to see the dozens of creatures that call this unique habitat home. Nothing but blackness. But sometime in the distant past, light came to the underground world. Dwight: Certainly Missouri cave resources have been utilized from the very beginning of time, when man entered Missouri and they continue to be used to this very day. To the Paleo Indians or the period of history from about ten thousand to twenty thousand years ago, caves were a very essential means of survival to those early cultures.  In the 1700's settlers from the east began to enter the state of Missouri.

Like the Native Americans before them, they used caves for shelter and protection, but they found another resource in caves necessary for survival. One of the ingredients for gunpowder. Dwight: And where the bats use a cave they leave guano on the floor, and they could extract this material, process it and come up with saltpeter crystals which, combined with sulfur and charcoal produces gunpowder. The growth of communities brought on new needs and new uses were found for Missouri's caves. Their spring fed streams were used for mills, the cool temperature was used as cool storage.

In St. Louis, caves where used as ice houses and as breweries. The turmoil of the Civil War, brought violence and chaos to the state, and Missouri's caves were no exception. With their stores of saltpeter for gunpowder, caves were a valuable commodity, eagerly sought by both sides in the conflict. Quantrill’s Irregulars were said to have destroyed gunpowder mills in Meramec Caverns, giving rise to the rumor that Jesse James, one of Quantrill’s men, later used the cave as a hideout. Then came the automobile and the electric light. Suddenly, caves transformed from utilitarian shelters to tourist attractions. Caves went commercial, and Missouri established its reputation as the cave state. Dwight: At this time, in Missouri history caves were commercialized. In many ways they modified the caves, they put in walkways, they put in platforms, and they used the caves for dance halls, beer gardens and roller rinks, all kinds of social activities.

Following World War II when we had better roads, better highways and better vehicles, they began to open caves for tourism. There's been no time since the beginning of this period that we haven't had at least two dozen show caves open to the public.  But Missouri's cave resources don't stop with the commercial caves. These underground sanctuaries provide a unique ecosystem for dozens of exotic creatures. They are valuable living laboratories; a place to study our groundwater resources. When light penetrates the darkness, the results can be astounding..
